A minox to Mecca...

...is the name of an exhibition photographer Aasil Ahmad held in Toronto, earlier in May, part of the A light unto the Nations exhibition with Muslim and Jewish photographers.

View the online photo gallery of what is a rare peak, due to photography in general being forbidden during the Pilgrimage, into what happens during the annual Pilgrimage to Mecca.

These are amazing!

I really got such a wide range of emotions from viewing them:
- little intimate moments within the mass of people
- the feeling of how secretive he was about feeling - taboo/haram - but how important it was for him to do this to share the story
- the bond that all these pilgims share

truly awesome images - thanks for sharing them with us!

I totally know what you mean. I mean even for me as a muslim, who hasn't been there, many of the images are new to me, unseen previously. I can just imagine what he must have been feeling and how hard it must have been to get a decent shot with those crowds of millions around him while containing his own spiritually overwhelming feelings.

those are great photos. thanks for sharing.

i'd really like an opportunity some day to take photos either during the hajj or some other time around the kaaba. do you know what the exact rules are pertaining to photography there? is there a way to get a "permit" of some sort?

Well Umar, CNN has managed to get special permits although they are never in the actual crowd circling mecca. If you have seen the movie Baraka, they filmed in Mecca but I don't recall if they were allowed to go inside the area around teh kaba...I think that is the tricky part to get permission for. Outside the Kaba a lot of people have managed to take pictures or get permission for it. You really should look into it...I'll be waiting to post the link to your own exhbition one day inshallah!

what a great exibition, must have been exilirating for him taking the photographs.

Yes I believe it must have been. Actually the fct that no one knew he was taking them makes it even more real and special because he caught people in the "act" of devotion and worship.
